Overview Of The Magazine Industry
Overview of the magazine industry
Every year 1.4 billion magazines are
sold worldwide, back in 1970, around 2.1 billion were sold in that year.
Surprisingly the top 3 selling magazines of 2013 in the UK are TV Choice,
What’s on TV and Take a break. The top 3
selling music magazines of 2012 were Kerrang, Q magazine and Mojo. 85% of the
population reads magazines. In 2008 advertisers spent £745 million on
advertising in magazines, to advertise in a magazine it costs £3460 to
advertise on a whole page with only using four colors. For two colors it
would cost £2490. Only 3 in 10 magazines that are published last up to four
years, if their sales fall too low they are not able to keep up with other
magazines and they are forced to stop publishing, plus publishers such as Bauer
or IPC Media will stop publishing a magazine if it does not sell well enough.
Every year about 500 new magazines are published, not many survive. There are
over 3,200 different magazine titles this year alone. In 1980 there were only 1,383 Magazine
titles, this shows how different the times have changed and how the media has
had an effect on new the new generation. The amount of magazine titles is
roughly at the highest it has ever been.
History of the magazine industry
In 1953 Playboy magazine had its first
issue published; it was the first magazine where sex and glamour mixed in a
magazine.
Then in 1967 Rolling Stone magazine
was published this was a different type of music magazine which was completely
different to other music magazines, this was a different type of music being
published and it is a good representation of the 1970’s
In 1972 the UK launch of Cosmopolitan, which was made for women, was the first magazine
which helped women take power and become equal to the male world, it stands for
power-play and sexual freedom for women.
In the 2000’s, Heat , Hello and Ok magazines were first
published these are all magazines which have influenced the new generation of
teenagers and young adult, by publishing magazines based on the celebrity world
and reality stars lives’. These were the first steps towards creating a media
lead world.
Researching Magazine Publishers
IPC Media
This magazine publisher has most published fashion and celebrity magazines a few examples are ‘OK’, ‘Marie Claire’ and ‘Star’ the only music magazine IPC Media publishes is NME but recently the amount of sales for these magazines has dramatically dropped with a 75% fall in pre-tax profits in 2012. OK magazine used to be the UK’s most loved magazine but now it has dropped to 6th place. I think my magazine would not be published by this publisher because my magazine is a music magazine and the only music magazine IPC Media publishes is NME and that is not doing very well. IPC is now known as Time Inc. UK it has a large portfolio which sell over 350 million copies every year. This magazine publisher has magazines for everyone, from NME to Women&Home and World Soccer. IPC has offices all around the world including Hong Kong, Chicago and London.
Bauer Media
Bauer Media Group is a large European-based media company, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. This magazine publisher is an all-round publisher; with a portfolio of more than 600 magazines which include Fishing magazines, sports magazines and music magazines among other magazines. Some of the music magazines that they publish include ‘Kiss Radio Magazine’, ‘the hits Radio’, ‘Q Magazine’ and Absolute Radio’ This is the sort of publisher I think my magazine could be published from because for one Bauer doesn’t just publish one style of magazine but they do publish a few well known music magazines which sell really well, this is the sort of thing I would want for my magazine. It has 50 radio and TV stations around the world.
Conde Nast
This magazine publisher publishes higher class magazines for example they publish Vogue which is a magazine aimed at well off females who are interested in expensive fashion and have a high income. Other magazines Conde Nast publish include Glamour, British GQ, Tatler, Brides and Vanity Fair; these are all aimed at well off women. My magazine would defiantly not be published by Conde Nast because for one they do not publish any music magazines; they mostly publish either fashion magazines or ones about house, designs and kitchens. Another reason my magazine wouldn’t be published by Conde Nast is because my target audience is a much younger age who don’t have a high income.
Original Ideas Statement
Original Ideas Statement
I have chosen to do a
music magazine, this is because I am into recent music myself so I thought it
would be easier to make something that I am into and enjoy. As well as a music
magazine I think adding a small amount of celebrity gossip or information into
it will grab my target audience’s attention as my target audience is mostly
into celebrities and music. My target audience for my magazine is teenage girls
from the age of 13 – 18 years old, I picked this age group because this is the
age that mostly listen to the latest music so I thought this would help me in
making the magazine as I can use artists and music I know about and they will
fit my target audience.
